Will he ever come back?
Short answer: Maybe, and "ever" is doing more work in that question than you think. People reconnect after months, after years, after other relationships. What predicts it isn't how long it's been, it's whether the relationship had real compatibility, whether he's shown ambivalence rather than certainty about ending it, and whether you've given him real space instead of chasing. Time alone doesn't bring anyone back. What you do with it does.
“Will he ever come back” is a different question from “will he come back this month,” and most people asking it have already been waiting long enough that the word “ever” has started to feel true. It usually isn’t.
I’m Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of How to Get Your Ex Back. What I’ve seen with clients asking this exact question is that the honest answer depends on specific, checkable things, and elapsed time isn’t one of the load-bearing ones.
What actually predicts whether he comes back?
| Predicts he comes back | Doesn’t help, or actively hurts |
|---|---|
| The relationship had real compatibility, not just history | You miss him a lot; missing someone isn’t evidence he’ll return |
| He showed ambivalence about ending it, not flat certainty | Constant texting, calling, or “just checking in” |
| A full no-contact period that gave both of you real space | Waiting by the phone instead of living your life |
| You’ve genuinely addressed whatever pattern broke things | Grand gestures, or friends relaying how much you’ve changed |
| He hasn’t seriously settled into a new relationship | Trying to make him jealous, or manufacturing a run-in |
Does “ever” really mean never?
Almost never, on its own. People reconnect after months apart, sometimes years, sometimes after both of them have dated other people first. What closes the door for good isn’t time passing, it’s one of two things: he tells you clearly and consistently that it’s over, or he settles into something new that’s genuinely serious. Outside of those, the door being open longer than you’d like isn’t the same as it being shut.
What should I actually do while I wait?
- Get honest about what ended it. A fight is different from a pattern, and a pattern is different from something that was already over before the breakup. Is the breakup really final walks through telling them apart.
- Run real no-contact, not a countdown. No texts, no checking his social media, no reaching out through a mutual friend to “see how he’s doing.” The point isn’t the silence itself, it’s what the silence lets you do.
- Fix whatever actually broke it. If you know the pattern, work on that directly, not a performance of working on it for when he might be watching.
- Build a life you’d want regardless of his answer. That’s not a tactic. It’s also, not coincidentally, what makes someone worth coming back to.
- Skip the manufactured signs. No post, no story view, no read receipt tells you the answer early. Let the actual process run its course.
Honest odds
In relationships that still had real compatibility and real feeling on both sides when they ended, reconciliation happens more often than not in the cases I see, once the process above is actually followed. There is no honest percentage for your situation, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Relationships that were already over before the breakup, running on habit or fear of being alone rather than genuine connection, almost never come back together, no matter how long you wait or what gets tried.
That’s not the answer anyone wants while they’re refreshing a phone that isn’t lighting up. It’s the true one, and figuring out honestly which situation you’re in matters more than the calendar does.

Does it mean he's never coming back if it's already been months?
No. Months, even years, of silence don't rule it out on their own. People reconnect on timelines much longer than the anxious brain wants to accept. What matters more than elapsed time is whether anything has actually changed on either side, and whether you've kept chasing or given real space.
What are the actual signs he's coming back?
He initiates contact without being prompted, asks about your life, and responds warmly and consistently once you reach out after real no-contact. One nice text isn't a trend. A pattern across several weeks is.
What are the signs he's not coming back?
He's told you directly and repeatedly, he's engaged or settled with someone else, or a genuine no-contact period followed by a calm re-entry attempt got a flat, cold response. Any one of those is real information, not a verdict on you.
Should I just wait for him to come back on his own?
Waiting passively rarely works, and waiting while building your own life is a different thing entirely. No-contact isn't sitting by the phone. It's the window where you fix whatever actually broke the relationship, so if he does come back, there's something real to come back to.
Can I do anything to make him come back faster?
Not without cost. Every attempt to speed it up (more texts, a bigger gesture, a mutual friend relaying how much you've changed) tends to push the timeline out further, not in. The moves that actually help are slow on purpose: real space, real change, and a plain re-entry once both are in place.
