What is mirroring when your ex brings up the relationship?
Short answer: Mirroring is reflecting your ex's emotional content and tone back to them, without adding feelings or opinions of your own, when they bring up the relationship first. In Benny Lichtenwalner's Five Rules method it lets you respond to a heavy moment without over-disclosing, so the ex does the emotional work while you stay the steady one in the conversation.
Mirroring is reflecting an ex’s emotional content back to them, in your own words, without adding feelings or opinions of your own. I’m Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of How to Get Your Ex Back, and I teach this to clients specifically for the moment an ex brings up the relationship, a past rupture, or anything heavy during the dating phase after no-contact. It’s how you respond to a serious topic without either shutting it down or over-explaining your own feelings.
How does mirroring actually work?
Three moves, in order. First, reflect: echo what your ex said in slightly different words, without adding anything. If they say “I’ve been thinking about us a lot lately, and I don’t know what I feel,” you say something like “yeah, a lot of mixed feelings on your end.” Second, hold: say nothing else and let them keep going if they want to. Third, contain: once they’ve said what they came to say, acknowledge it warmly without matching it with a confession of your own, then redirect to something lighter or end the exchange.
Why does this work better than just answering honestly?
Because your ex is doing the emotional work, and you’re the steady surface they’re doing it in front of. If you flinch or over-reassure, it can read as needy. If you deflect or shut the topic down, it can read as cold or distant. Mirroring threads that needle: your ex feels heard without you handing over more than the moment calls for.
When shouldn’t I use mirroring?
Only use it when your ex brings the topic up first and they’re reasonably calm, not in the middle of an emotional flood. If they’re upset and escalating, a brief warm acknowledgment followed by a light redirect works better than trying to mirror a conversation that isn’t regulated yet. And if you’re the one who opens a heavy topic, mirroring won’t undo that. The mistake happened before the technique had a chance to help.
