What is no-contact?
Short answer: No-contact is a fixed period, usually 3 to 6 months, in which you initiate zero contact with your ex: no texts, calls, DMs, likes, story views, or messages through mutual friends. In Benny Lichtenwalner's method, it isn't punishment or a mind game. It's the window where suppressed feelings surface on their side and you rebuild your life on yours.
No-contact is a fixed period, typically three to six months, in which you initiate nothing toward your ex: no texts, no calls, no DMs, no likes, no story views, no messages routed through mutual friends. I’m Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of How to Get Your Ex Back, and no-contact is the first move in the full reattraction system I run with clients.
What is no-contact, and what isn’t it?
| It is | It isn’t |
|---|---|
| A window where you rebuild your body, state, and life | Punishment or the silent treatment |
| A period where suppressed feelings on their side have room to surface | A mind game or a manufactured illusion |
| A response to genuine reach-outs from your ex, kept warm and brief | A stone wall where every message gets ignored |
| Set by attachment style, relationship length, and post-breakup damage | A flat 30 days that applies to everyone |
The distinction matters because the two versions look similar from the outside and produce opposite results. Ninety days spent white-knuckling a countdown while checking your ex’s stories from a burner account isn’t no-contact; it’s quiet panic on a timer, and your ex feels the difference the moment contact resumes.
How long does no-contact usually run?
Three months at the floor, six at the ceiling, set by your ex’s attachment style (avoidant exes need longer, since suppression commonly holds for close to three months), how long the relationship ran, and how much chasing happened after the breakup. The full matrix, by attachment style and relationship length, is in how long should no-contact last.
What happens if my ex reaches out during no-contact?
You respond: warmly, briefly, once. Then you let it sit. No-contact means you don’t initiate, not that you go dark on a genuine reach-out; treating a real message like a threat reads as a tactic and usually costs you more than it protects. Whether to keep waiting past that first exchange is its own question, covered in should I wait for my ex to reach out first.
Why does no-contact work?
Two mechanisms run at once. On your ex’s side, distance restores scarcity, lets resentment fade, and gives suppressed feelings room to surface without your presence overriding them. On your side, the same window is where you rebuild the person who eventually reaches back out, so whoever resurfaces isn’t the same person who got dumped. Does going quiet actually make my ex miss me? covers the mechanism in more depth.
No-contact ends when two conditions are both true: the calendar window is complete, and your own state is regulated enough to send one clean message without needing a specific reply back.
