What is an orbiter?
Short answer: An orbiter is someone an ex keeps circling for warmth and validation without ever closing the distance: no meetup, no plan, no real progress. In Benny Lichtenwalner's Five Rules method, the fix is refusing the role. Stay warm and brief if your ex reaches out, but stop carrying conversations that never move toward logistics.
An orbiter is someone an ex keeps in reach for warmth and validation without ever moving toward them: no meetup, no plan, no real logistics. I’m Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of How to Get Your Ex Back, and I see this pattern constantly in the weeks after no-contact ends: an ex texts often enough that the thread feels alive, but the conversation never closes into anything real.
How do I know if I’m an orbiter?
Run the pattern against a few weeks, not one exchange.
| Signal | What it means |
|---|---|
| They text every few days, warm but short | Keeping the connection technically alive |
| They never mention their availability | No intent to close logistics |
| Late-night messages, especially when their current situation is rocky | You’re the pressure-relief valve, not the plan |
| Compliments and warm check-ins with no follow-up energy | Validation-seeking, not reattraction |
| The conversation never gets past “we should catch up sometime” | Vague words, no behavior behind them |
None of this reads as cold. That’s what makes it work on people: the warmth feels like progress. It isn’t. On the investment ladder, an orbiter can sound like rung 3 while behaving like rung 1: the words are warm, the effort toward you never lands.
Why do exes do this?
Usually it isn’t calculated. It’s regulation. They’re getting something (attention, comfort, the sense that someone still wants them) without paying anything for it. That’s especially common if they’re in another relationship that isn’t going well: you become the place they vent without having to leave.
What do I do about it?
Stay warm if they reach out. Stay brief. Stop being the one who carries the thread, and stop reading a friendly text as a sign things are moving. If you genuinely want to test the pattern, the move is absence, not confrontation: pull back and go quiet on your side. If they were slowly re-engaging, your absence will surface real effort, they’ll reach with something that actually costs them something. If they were using you as an orbiter, the contact resolves cleanly, and they’ll find someone else to circle. Either way, you get your answer without ever having to ask for it.
