What is the re-entry message after no-contact?

From the vocabulary of Benny Lichtenwalner's reattraction method · Updated 2026-09-28

Short answer: The re-entry message is the first text you send an ex after no-contact ends. In Benny Lichtenwalner's Five Rules method it's a door-opener, not a pitch: it names the distance, shows warmth without a confession, and skips any pretext. It works whether or not the ex replies, because sending it costs you nothing.

The re-entry message is the first text you send an ex once no-contact ends. I’m Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of How to Get Your Ex Back, and I tell every client the same thing before they send it: this is a door-opener, not a pitch. It names the distance, shows warmth, and leaves your ex room to walk through, or not, without you having lost anything by sending it.

What does the re-entry message actually say?

Something close to: “Hey, it’s been a long time. How have you been? I’ve been thinking about you.” Every part of that line is doing work. “It’s been a long time” names the gap without apologizing for it. “How have you been?” is open and genuinely curious. “I’ve been thinking about you” shows interest without confessing anything, it’s not “I miss you,” not “I want to talk,” and it’s not built around a pretext like a birthday or a holiday. Pretexts are transparent, and most exes see through them immediately.

What kills a re-entry message?

Don’t send Why it fails
“We need to talk” Reads as a pitch, not an opener
“I’ve changed and want to explain” Confession before any warmth is re-established
“Happy birthday! Hope you’re well” A pretext your ex can see through
A long voice note Too much investment for a first contact
Anything with “miss,” “sorry,” “love,” “we” Confesses feelings before the door is even open

What happens after I send it?

The reply tells you everything. A long, warm response with questions back means you can move slowly toward suggesting a specific plan. A short, polite reply with no questions means stay light and patient for weeks before pushing anything. A one-word or delayed reply means the timing wasn’t right yet, go back to a longer stretch of no-contact and try again later rather than following up.

One rule that surprises people: never send a second message if the first goes unanswered. A single, well-timed opener sent once, without a pretext and without pressure, does its job either way. If it doesn’t land this time, it wasn’t a failed message. It was information about timing.
