What happens when you break a rule in the Five Rules method?
Short answer: The rule-break reset is what happens when you break one of Benny Lichtenwalner's Five Rules while dating your ex again: the two-month dating-phase clock restarts. The consequence is only half of it. The real fix is finding what actually caused the break, whether it's anxiety, a bad day, or a lonely week, because fixing only the behavior guarantees a repeat.
The rule-break reset is what happens after you break one of my Five Rules while dating your ex again: the two-month dating-phase clock restarts. I’m Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of How to Get Your Ex Back, and I tell every client the reset is only half of what matters. The other half is figuring out why the break happened, because skipping that step guarantees the same slip again within weeks.
What actually causes a rule break?
It’s rarely a discipline problem. In my coaching, breaks trace back to one of a few underlying things:
| What’s really going on | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Running on too little sleep or no structure that day | Anxious check-in text, “just wanted to see how you’re doing” |
| An old fear getting triggered | Confessing feelings the moment your ex goes quiet |
| A lonely week with nothing else going on | Reading into a text and asking for a meetup too soon |
| Genuine tactical error, everything else was fine | Misreading a signal and proposing plans before the timing was right |
Match the break to the cause before you decide what to fix. A client who breaks a rule because they haven’t slept needs rest and structure that week, not a lecture about self-control.
Why can’t I just “follow the rules harder”?
Because the rule was never the real issue. It’s where an underlying problem showed up. If a client is anxious and depleted, telling them to white-knuckle the rule next time just delays the same break. Fix the thing underneath, whether that’s rest, an old wound, or a life that’s shrunk down to only the ex, and the rule stops feeling like a fight to hold.
What do I do right after a break?
Reset the clock and move on; don’t spiral on it. One break doesn’t undo the reattraction, it delays the dating-phase timeline by restarting the two-month window. What actually does damage is a pattern: the same rule breaking three or more times in a short stretch. If that’s happening, pause the dating phase entirely for a few weeks and deal with the underlying cause before running the rules again. Running the same protocol through the same unresolved problem just produces the same break on repeat.
