What is the state build phase of no-contact?
Short answer: The state build is the second phase of no-contact, roughly weeks three through six, once crash recovery has stopped the bleeding. In Benny Lichtenwalner's 90-day plan, daily body-based practice (movement, breath work, cold exposure, sunlight) becomes the job, old friends return, and a flicker of boredom shows up, a sign the nervous system is regulating.
The state build is the stretch of no-contact that comes after crash recovery, roughly weeks three through six. I’m Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of How to Get Your Ex Back, and this is the phase where the work shifts from surviving to actually building a regulated nervous system.
What changes once crash recovery is done?
The basics from crash recovery, sleep, meals, one walk, stay in place, but now there’s room to add real practice on top of them: daily movement, breath work, cold exposure, sunlight within an hour of waking. Three to five workouts a week. Old friends who dropped off the radar during the breakup start coming back into rotation.
The goal isn’t to feel great. It’s to feel like a person again, one who can hold a conversation, show up somewhere, and get through a day without the body running on crisis chemistry.
What does “beginning to feel boredom” actually mean here?
It sounds like a strange marker of progress, but boredom requires a baseline level of regulation that a crashed nervous system doesn’t have. When you’re in crisis, every spare moment gets filled with checking, replaying, spiraling. When the state build is working, some of that space opens up, and what fills it, at first, is just… nothing much. That’s the nervous system settling, not a setback.
| Crash recovery | State build |
|---|---|
| Survive: sleep, eat, one walk | Build: workouts, cold exposure, sunlight |
| Isolation feels necessary | Old friends back in rotation |
| No bandwidth for anything extra | Room for daily practice |
| Panic is the dominant state | Boredom starts showing up |
What comes after the state build?
The final stretch is consolidation: identity rebuild, new experiences accumulating, friends noticing you seem different. That’s covered in full, phase by phase, in the 90-day plan, along with the daily protocol that carries you through all three stretches.
